Printed Patterned Painted Journal Making Class

“Why not have a journal full of prepped, ready-to-go pages for art journaling on hand? Using my favorite page surface treatment techniques, you can have a journal filled with pages ready to receive images, collage, writing, drawings, and more paint. The pages will not stick to together. All the color and visual texture will beg you to journal! You will find that you will journal more often and more easily when you have a journal loaded with prepared surfaces. The blank page syndrome, where when you crack open a journal to an empty page and every idea flies out of your head, will no longer be an issue for you! Two simple binding techniques will show you how to incorporate the papers into a book. One technique will lie complete flat for use and be so easy to make!

A number of people ave inquired about my teaching my page treatment techniques online. I have decided to have a class that covers as many techniques as I can! Join in! It will be a great holiday treat for you. You’re bound to discover techniques you will use again and again.

We’ll cover:

scraped acrylics plus variations

gesso and paint sgraffito

combing

acrylic medium and gesso resists

stencils and masks- reductive stenciling, gesso+paint stenciling, using inks and other indoor spray products, making stencils and masks at home

gelatin monoprinting

adding surface texture with paper

guerrilla printmaking- make-your-own foamie stamps, recycle bin stamps, paint rollers, homemade brayer stamps, carving a stamp

nature printing

two easy binding techniques will be shown so you can create a book with your papers

The class will begin on December 14 and will run until January 31. You can begin at any time and sign up late if you like. There will be three lessons posted each week. The binding techniques will be posted early on and be available for you to use throughout the class. We will have a photo pool for sharing images at flickr.

The cost is $35 for six weeks of lessons. You can begin at any time, and all the information will remain available until two weeks after the close of class. (This class will go offline on February 14)”

Exciting news – Jessica Wesolek of Cre8it.com has announced a new Cre8it workdate using PanPastels. A 5 week video lesson online workshop starting 6th November 2009.

A truly new art medium is a very rare thing . . .

Reformulating, repurposing, and repackaging are common ways to keep art supplies that have been around for centuries, feeling new.

But, PanPastels really are new and very different from the soft pastels on which they are based.

Artist grade soft pastels are an old and traditional medium (1600s). They look wonderful, but they behave in certain ways which make them hard to use for many artists. They aren’t easy to store, they are fragile, and they create an unholy mess of dust. They also have to be fixed with sprays that smell and are toxic.

So, the introduction of PanPastels has knocked the socks off anyone who tries them, because they do not create that mess, are easy to handle, and have a consistency that almost feels creamy, even though they are a dry medium. They blend like a dream, and can be applied with special “brushes” like you would apply paint. The colors are so rich it is like working with pure pigment, and maybe the best thing of all, they erase!!!

When I first heard of them, I literally ran out to get them and I have been having a love affair with them ever since. I have learned a lot about using them outside of the traditional pastel paradigm, and how to combine them with other media. In this workshop. I will share that information with you.

Each week, for 5 weeks, you will be given a video lesson on how to use PanPastels and the special tools that come with them, called Sofftools.

We will learn to “paint” and draw with Pan Pastels and to combine them with other media for some fantastic and unusual results.

Travel Journal workshop – Bath

Ever wanted to keep a Travel Journal? Then come along to my hands-on Travel Journal workshop being held by Writing Events Bath.

Every participant will receive a copy of our booklet “How to Keep a Travel Journal” (see below),we will be looking at ideas for collecting information and how to add visual elements to your journal even if you do not consider yourself to be artistic. You will pick up some tips to make your travels truly memorable.

The workshop is being held at St Michael’s Church cafe, Broad Street, Bath, UK (opposite Waitrose) on Wednesday 23rd September from 6.30 – 8.30pm.

The workshop has it’s own Yahoo Group which is already very lively and there is some inspirational work being posted. Danny says -
“Every Tuesday evening from November 11th to December 16, I shall be teaching a workshop at the Open Center in New York City. It’s entitled, “Everyday Matters – Illustrated Journaling as a Path to Creativity.” We’ll form a group of journalers and explore all aspects of the art form over six wonderful weeks. I do hope you can join us!
